@johnm go for Ankermann duel core quad with 4Gb ddr2 xp pro and a suitable video card.. you will need to install pro and do some tweaking but fantastic value - super quiet option worth the 25!
I just bought the box John - nothing else - all you need to do is install XP yourself the box I got delivered would have cost 2500 approx. from Dell I got my for 850 delivered - its worth it - and fairly easy to set it up. You may want to add an additional Video card...

So do they install the drives, power supply, motherboard etc? If it runs silently I may consider it alright.

yes they put the hardware together John you just have to prep the HD and install the O/S instructions and disks all provided -
